80,000 Hours sets a simple bar for anyone getting into AI safety: could you talk with someone at a conference for 30 minutes and leave them convinced you understand the core problems and a few potential solutions?
There are many incredible courses and reading groups that build that understanding, but few opportunities to test and hone it in a live setting.
AI Debate Club is a low-pressure way to sharpen your skills for higher-stakes settings like interviews, funder calls, and conference one-on-ones. It’s also a lot of fun.
How it works
We run sessions online and in person in the SF Bay Area. The gist:
- A resolution and readings go out in advance.
- Prep a few talking points for each side.
- Get paired up and assigned a side at random.
- Opening arguments, then rebuttals.
- Exchange feedback.
No decks or scripts allowed.
Who is this for?
All levels of AI safety fluency are welcome and no debate experience is required. Come to prepare, to connect, or just to have a good time.
In the spirit of ACX meetups: “Please feel free to come even if you feel awkward about it.”
